AEO vs GEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
SEO helps pages become visible in search results. AEO and GEO focus on becoming part of the answer generated for the user. The terms overlap, but the measurement changes.
The short answer
SEO improves visibility in traditional search results. AEO improves the chance that your information becomes a direct answer. GEO improves how your brand or content appears in generative AI responses. In modern marketing, AEO and GEO are frequently used for the same broader discipline.
“AI SEO,” “LLM optimization,” “AI search optimization,” and “AI visibility optimization” are additional labels for closely related work. Do not let the acronym decide the strategy. Start with the customer questions that matter, measure the actual answers, and improve the underlying evidence available to those systems.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO comparison
| Term | Meaning | Primary goal | Common measurements | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search engine optimization | Earn visibility in traditional search results | Rankings, impressions, clicks, conversions, backlinks | Search result pages and websites |
| AEO | Answer engine optimization | Become part of the direct answer | Answer inclusion, citations, accuracy, coverage | AI assistants, answer engines, featured answers |
| GEO | Generative engine optimization | Increase visibility within generated responses | Mentions, position, share of voice, citations, sentiment | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI features |
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of making information easier for systems that provide direct answers to find, understand, trust, and use. The term predates generative AI and can include featured snippets, voice assistants, knowledge panels, and question-answering systems.
For a business, the desired answer may be a recommendation rather than a quotation. The relevant question is not only “Did my webpage rank?” but “Was my business named, described accurately, and supported by a source?”
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization focuses specifically on systems that synthesize a new response, including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's generated AI experiences. GEO work may improve the discoverability, clarity, authority, and corroboration of information that could be used in those responses.
GEO is not a hidden switch that forces a model to mention a brand. Results can vary by platform, model, location, wording, time, and source availability. That is why a credible GEO program uses repeat measurement and keeps the answer-level evidence.
Does AI visibility replace traditional SEO?
No. Search visibility and AI visibility are connected, but neither is a substitute for the other. Search engines still send traffic and help people discover source material. AI systems also draw on crawlable websites, recognized entities, trusted publications, directories, reviews, communities, and other third-party evidence.
A sound approach keeps the SEO fundamentals—technical accessibility, useful content, clear site structure, credible references, and measurement—then adds monitoring for generated answers, citations, competitor presence, and referral traffic.
How to measure AEO and GEO
- 1. Define buyer questions. Include discovery, comparison, use-case, and trust questions—not only searches containing your brand name.
- 2. Establish a baseline. Ask the same questions across the AI platforms your customers are likely to use.
- 3. Sample repeatedly. Generated answers change. Record the sample count instead of declaring a permanent rank from one result.
- 4. Record the complete evidence. Track brand mentions, position, competitors, sentiment, citations, models, and collection times.
- 5. Make a defensible change. Improve content, entity clarity, corroboration, listings, or source relationships based on an observed gap.
- 6. Recheck the same questions. Look for a pattern over time while acknowledging that correlation does not prove one change caused the result.
Which term should your business use?
Use the term your audience already understands, then define it. “AI visibility” is usually the clearest description of the measurable outcome. AEO and GEO are useful when speaking with search and content professionals, but small-business owners should not need a glossary before understanding the product.
